Children's GardenIn the spring of 2008 Strategies for Change started a children’s garden with “seed” money from Soroptimist International of Sacramento South. Some time later The garden was vandalized. The children were stunned to find a fence kicked in and all the planting barrels, soil and winter vegetables gone. Many people contacted us to express concern and offer help. In late February over 120 volunteers descended upon us to restore, revitalize and replant. In two days we prepped and painted the entire building, cleaned up our landscape, installed 3 permanent raised vegetable beds, improved security lighting, built and painted seating areas AND painted 3 murals! It was a stunning effort with memorable results. American River College, Department of Horticulture followed with a significant donation of tomatoes, peppers, basil, eggplant and cucumber. Today, the garden soil is warm and the planting bed and barrels are full of tomatoes, beans, onions and eggplant. A few sunflowers are popping up too. The kids are outside most days and really enjoy taking their time touching and experiencing it all! Thank you Sacramento volunteers for giving us our garden back!
